Fleur de Lis

The irises are in full bloom here in the gardens of the Deep South.

It is said in legend that the fleur de lis symbol heralding French royalty was modeled after the iris’ unusual flower when Clovis, the founder of the Merovingian dynasty of Frankish kings, was given an iris by an angel (or the Virgin Mary in some stories) upon his conversion to Christianity.
